Abstract:
The main objective of this study is exploring pain management in Gəˀəz medico-magical texts.
To achieve this objective, the researcher used hermeneutic phenomenological textual analysis
research design in a qualitative research approach. Data were collected through interview and
document review. Data collected from documents and key informants are organized into themes
using specific research strategies. The analysis of this study revealed that Twenty four herbal
products were used for pain management. As the finding of the study showed, spiritual healing
mechanisms, herbal and animal products were employed to manage illnesses. The type of
medication, the route of administration, the duration, the frequency and the reversals were the
contents of some prescriptions for pain management. The routes of administrations were oral,
intranasal, topical and intramuscular burying. The diagnostic modality mainly depended on
clinical features of the illness with some magical interventions, but they were not sufficient
enough to identify the top diagnosis and some terms are not clear what to mean. For this reason,
the data obtained from interviews, field observation and group discussion were supplemented for
its validity. Regarding on the preventive practices, spiritual method with or without herb and
animal products were used .Also, religious institution mainly to holy water and modern health
centers were the referral sites in the practices of traditional healers. The study identified some
malpractices of traditional healers as in unnecessary surgical interventions and over dosage. It
is recommended that further research should be done to explore more on pain and pain
management guidelines to enhance the good practices and to minimize the malpractices
