This study explored the content of Gädlä ‘Abunä Yafqǝrännä Ǝgzi’, located at the combined museum of Mǝṣle Fasilädäs and Gwəgwǝben monasteries in Dära Woreda, South Gondar diocese. A qualitative approach was employed with thematic data analysis, based on the primary data obtained from the manuscript. The Gädl was the main source of information. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted as a triangulation method for data collection. The data were gathered and photocopied using a digital camera. Through close reading, the main contents were identified and organized by themes, namely the religious, social, political, and cultural aspects, emphasizing moral principles, historical sites, and animal names. The study aimed to fill gaps in political histories and explore the life, contributions, and struggles of this saint, which have not been previously studied. The findings demonstrated that the saint ‘Abunä Yafqǝrännä Ǝgzi’ was an Ethiopian monastic father who lived in the 14th century. He was born in Hägäray, Tigray Province, to Gäbrä ’Iyesus and Afomia. The saint played a significant role in resolving community crises, such as mediating during the military conflicts of King ‘Amdä Séyon and helping to quench the thirst of Ethiopian troops. His humanitarian acts included praying for leaders, healing the sick, helping the hungry, and offering governance advice, demonstrating the connection among spiritual sanctity, tangible social responsibility, and ethical education. He also founded a monastery. The study further examines the intertextuality of the Gädl, including quotations, paraphrases, and allusions. It also explores the language used, such as personification, metaphor, symbolism, simile, and hyperbole (exclamation). Overall, the Gädl is a highly valuable resource for historical, linguistic, intertextual, and theological research, as well as for understanding the deeds of 14th-century saints.
