Abstract:
Ge'sz hagiographies constitute the largest group of sources for medieval Ethiopian history. Vita, among
the subgenre of hagiography, is an important source for historical, language, literary and theological
studies in addition to the deed of saints. This study assessed one of the vitas in Ga7az literature written for
group saints - the six saints from Gori:igor Maryam, North Wi:illo. Its objective was to analyze
thematically the vita of the six. The study used qualitative research design through thematic data analysis
by obtained primary data from the manuscript. The study would fill the gaps of political histories, the life,
contribution and struggle of group of saints' in the l 6111c that was not studied yet. As to the result, the six
saints; Abund Miir'awi , Abund Musse, Abund Mssasso, Abund Mo'abra, Abund Ddnqoro, and Abund
!lla§fan were Ethiopian monastic fathers who lived in the l 61" century who have unique features
compared to other communal monastery saints. They were originated in the same vicinity but different
family. They were lived and behaved together like sextuplet. They have one vita, one Malka~ one 'arke,
received similar covenant from God, have one ark in their name, one commemoration date, deed miracles
without separation and hidden in one cave at the same day altogether with their disciples. Preaching the
Gospel, ethical education, founding the monastery and building a church of St. Marry are some contribution of the
saints. The emergence of Catholicism and its consequence in Ethiopia, about the illness and the cure of
Ase Sussnyos were discussed that was not stated in his chronicle. The saints were among who cured Ase
Susenyos from his illness. Moreover, the causes of war between Ase Lsbnd Dengel and Ahmad Ibn
Ibrahim al-Ghazi: emperor's proclamation of tobacco use, the desire to have war "tor Awursd", horse
contest in the feast of the finding of the true cross were addressed by the vita that also fills the gap of the
chronicle of Ase Lsbnd Dengel. So, the vita is also valuable to understand the political history of the I 61"
century.
