Abstract:
Catalogue of a manuscript is one of the major research thematic areas in Ethiopic
manuscripts. However, the work of manuscript catalogue is still unreachable comparing with
the huge number of manuscripts found within different Churches, Monasteries, and private
hands. The church of of Däbrä Gännät Baḥrəy Gəmb St. Mikaeˀl is one of the ancient
churches in central Gondär Administrative Zone. Even though the church has 18 different
types of manuscripts, the unwillingness of the farmer family does not catalogue all the
manuscrippts. Therefore, the present study was carried out to catalogue 10 manuscripts.
Among these 5 hagiographical, 3 service books, 1 biblical book, and 1 hitorical book. Mixed
research approach and document analysis design were employed. The research area and the
manuscripts were non sumpling test. The data were collected through fieldwork and
inventory. The data were analyzed in narration. The catalogue of most manuscripts showed
that recorded in registration numbers tagged within the covers of the manuscripts. But some
are having not registration number. Also, all manuscripts are written only on parchment with
Gǝˀǝz and Amharic language, using black and red ink. While, yellow, green, white, purple
and blue inks are used for painting purposes. Most of the manuscripts are 20thcentury hands.
Most of the manuscripts are found, more than one hand writings and. Some are multi-textual
in their contents. Most of the munuscripts are lucks Colophon and purchase notes. This study
is very important to unfold the overall information of some manuscripts for further studies.
Finally, all manuscripts found in a bad situation. Therefore, the responsible body should play
their roles to preserve such types of manuscripts via building the standard museum to secure
the benefits of the manuscripts.
