ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' perceptions and their practice of
active learning in EFL classes, and factors aifetting the implementation of active learning.
To achieve the objectives, a survey study involving quantitative and qualitative methods
was employed. The study was conducted in 5 government secondary schools in Bahir Dar
city. The data were c<9llectedfrom 26 English language teachers and 286 students. The
data were collected through teachers and students' questionnaire, classroom observation.
and interview with teachers. The data collected through questionnaire and observation
was analyzed in 'percentage and qualitatively. The findings disclosed that teachers have
positive perception to active learning methods, but they are practicing limited active
learning methods. The.findings also revealed that inadequate training, large class size,
the physicaHayout of the classrooms was found to be among the barriers to implement
active Ieaminq methods in EFL classes. On the basis of the.findings, the researcher has
