It was particularly meant to investigate the performance of teachers and students in language classes and to discover if the learners' speaking competence was developed. More over, the study was targeted to investigating the conception of teachers and students about the communicative approach of language teaching. -The study was conducted in two secondary schools of South Gondar administrative zone. The participants of the study were 20 teachers, 380 students, one supervisor and four principals of the two high schools. The data were collected ' through questionnaires and interviews and the results were analyzed qualitatively. The results .of the study revealed that teachers were not in a position to properly apply skill. The study indicated that though the majority of teachers tried to apply (CLT), they were faced with implementation problems. The combined responses of the participants Speaking skill of language teachers and the learners' poor language background. The results also disclosed that most of the communication in English classes was in Amharic and this implies that the communicative language teaching methodology was n~t being applied by teachers as it was intended en_US
