Knowledge of the kinds and properties of soils is critical for making decisions for crop production and land use types. This study was conducted to determine the physic-chemical properties and identify the major soils of the Chimchimit micro-watershed in West of Mount Guna, South Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia. A reconnaissance survey with extensive visual observations and descriptions was conducted. The micro-watershed was classified into upper, middle, and lower slope positions. A total of 15 disturbed soil samples and 15 undisturbed soil samples were collected from the six profiles to characterize and classify the soils. Based on the results, the colour of the surface soils varied from yellowish brown (10YR 4/2) when dry to dark brown (10YR 3/3) when moist condition. The soil consistencies at the surface profiles were soft to very hard (when dry) and slightly sticky to sticky, non-plastic to plastic when (wet). The soil structure was wedge-shaped and lumpy, angular blocky to sub angular and granular to prismatic in surface soil. The textural classes of all profiles varied from loam to heavy clay. The bulk density of the surface horizon was lower than that of the subsurface horizons. The total porosity increases as the bulk density decreases and vice versa. The soil water at FC, PWP, and AWC increased with clay content and with depth. The soil pH value varied from 4.92 at the surface to 6.5 at the subsurface horizon and rated as strongly acidic to slightly acidic. The exchangeable (Ca 2+ & Mg 2+ ),CEC and PBS were rated as medium to very high. Whereas ex. K, + varied from very low to very high and ex. Na was rated as low. The TN and OM content of the surface layers were rated as low to high. The Av. P content was belonging with low rate. The extractable Fe,Mn,Cu and Zn were rated as high, medium to high, low to medium and low to high respectively at all profiles. Based on the morphological and physicochemical properties and results, the soils of study area were classified as Eutric Cambisols, Leptic Regosols, Dystric Cambisols and Chromic Luvisols. +
