Abstract:
Background: The term diabetes mellitus describes a metabolic disorder of multiple
etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbance of carbohydrates, fats
and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both.
Objective: “assessment and factors associated with knowledge among patient with type 2
diabetic mellitus for choosing the right food in yekatit 12 hospital, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: a simple random sampling method was applied to select the study participants.
Data were collected using an interviewer administered pretested structured questionnaire.
Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.Descriptive statistics was used to describe the
socio-demographic variables.Bi-variate analyses was done to see the association between
eachindependentvariables and the outcome variables. Multivariable analysis was carried
out to identify independent predictors of the dependent variable. Odds ratio along with
95% CI were used to measure the strength of the association between variables of
interest. For all statistical significance, the cut- off value was P < 0.05.
Result: about 47.3% ofrespondents had good knowledge, towards choosing the right
food.In multivariable analysis being male [AOR=0.51, 95%CI: (0.31, 0.84)] was
negatively associated with knowledge of type 2 DM patients for choosing the right
food. Conclusion: About 47.3% of the type 2 diabetic patients had good knowledge
towards choosing the right food. Being male was negatively associated with knowledge
of type 2 DM patients for choosing the right food.
Recommendation: Hospital based intervention program should be implemented to
improve knowledgeespecially for male patients.
