dc.description.abstract Abstract This thesis tries to analyze allegory and symbolism used in Hiruy Wolde Silasie’s novel ‘Wodaje Libe’. The study has the general and specific objectives. The general objective is to analyze symbolism and allegory in the novel. The study also sets specific objectives. The first one is identifying the situations which allegory and symbolism are used and the conventional and private symbols used in the text. The second objective is showing the surface and hidden meaning that are expressed through allegory and symbolism. The last one is pointing out the comparisons that are made by the narrator among the books of all kinds (The Old Testament, The New Testament, the book of the philosopher and, the apocryphal books). A detailed discussion of the term allegory and symbolism and their related concepts are reviewed to provide insight into the meaning of allegory and symbolism. Interpretation and hermeneutics are also discussed as a theoretical framework to help the study in analyzing the novel when interpreting. The study is qualitative in its nature and applies close reading, textual, and contextual analysis of the novel. To carry out the given objectives, the study tries to review important and relevant literatures. There is also a review of previous research conducted in relation to allegory and symbolism. In the analysis, the researcher tries to see different concepts related to allegory and symbolism (both conventional and private symbols). The analysis focuses on the narrator’s way of projecting his own allegorical and symbolical stories to communicate what he observed in his journey. The surface and hidden meanings expressed through allegory and symbolism are analyzed by carefully focusing on the contextual meanings that are found in the novel. In the conclusion a comparison is made between the different books the narrator has read and the final choices that he made to return to his home and his normal life with his beloved friend, his heart with many blessings. In the conclusion also found that, allegory and symbolism play a great role in composing the novel in the search of the narrator for wisdom, truth, and knowledge through reading many books. en_US
