The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of role play in improving the speaking skills of grade ten students in Andabet Senior Secondary and preparatory school. So as to achieve the objective, teaching material was prepared based on the current grade ten English text books. The researcher used the speaking parts of grade ten English text book (units; 9, 10, 11, and 12). And the speaking lessons of these units were changed into role play teaching technique. A quasi experimental design was adopted and the sampling technique was purposive. Oral test with scoring rubric was administered. Two independent groups of Andabet Senior Secondary and Preparatory School students were selected randomly as experimental and control group. One class (N=46) representing the experimental group learned through role play technique while the other class (N=40) representing the control group learned the same part following regular teaching instruction. Data were collected from pre test and post test rated by two raters’ and analyzed using SPSS soft ware using independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test. Results revealed that there were statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental (M=58.65) and control (M=44.80) group subjects on their speaking the target language in favor of the experimental group after treatment. Results also showed statistically significant difference between mean scores of the experimental group participants in the paired sample t-test of their pre-post test scores of oral English in micro skills of speaking test at .05 levels. (Pretest=43.48, post-test=58.65). These results support that using role play language teaching technique has positive effects in improving the speaking skills of grade ten students in Andabet Senior Secondary and Preparatory school. It is recommended that teaching speaking should be given more attention in the class and teachers should adopt role play technique to improve their students’ speaking skills |
