The Purpose of this study was to assess the practice of active learning techniques in speaking lesson in Borena General Secondary and Preparatory school of grade 10 students and their EFL teachers. From this school 120 were drawn from 568 students and 7 English Language teachers were participants of the study. Comprehensive sampling was used to select EFL teachers and simple random sampling was used to select the sample students from the target population. The study employed descriptive research design with both quantitative and qualitative methods of data analyses. Questionnaire, semi- structured interview, and classroom observations were used to generate data in the study process. The validity and reliability of the research instruments were validated. Percentage and mean were used to analyze the quantitative data, whereas; thematic analysis was employed to analyze the qualitative data. The findings of the study showed that active learning strategies were not implemented in the actual classroom in speaking lesson as it is expected. However, active learning strategies most commonly used by EFL teachers in speaking lesson were, discussion, group work, and questioning and answering. Finally the study showed that there is still limitation in using various active learning strategies in speaking lesson by EFL teachers.
