dc.description.abstract he purpose of this study was to investigate the status of support and academic achievement of orphan and vulnerable children, OVC; general level of orphan and vulnerable children's academic achievement and achievement difference between OVC and non-OVC, school care and support needs of OVC, attitude of teachers and non- OVC towards OVC, and the self perception of orphan and vulnerable children. Data were collected from 160 /80 OVC and 80 .non-OVC/ children and 30 teachers and director school records were employed to collect data. Descriptive analysis, an independent t-test from four primary schools ofBahir Dar city. Questionnaire, interview, attitude scales and .. \ and analysis of variance used to analyze the data obtained. Results indicated that the general level of OVC was good and there was no statistically significant difference between the achievement of OVC and non-OVC within orphan and '· vulnerable children double orphans and maternal orphans were low achievers than paternal orphans, and girls were also less achiever than boys.. Although orphan and vulnerable children have the need for school base care and support so that they continue ' ' education and improve their achievement, response to their needs was insufficient, ' iricomprehensive and unsustainable. The psychosocial needs of OVC were almost ignored. Teachers had high attitude while non-orphan and vulnerable children had low attitude towards orphan and vulnerable children. Orphan and vulnerable children had positive or high perception towards themselves. Overall, there is a need to assis~ and care for OVC in order to help them continue their education in a sustainable and effective manner. To achieve this, all the concerned bodies; the government, schools, NGOs, and the commun(~ should exert concerted efforts. en_US
