Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to explore students andteachers’ perceptions towards CLT, how often they employ its principles in language classes and what difficulties they face when they try to implement it.
In this research work, descriptive survey design was chosen because of its appropriateness to gather the necessary data in the actual classroom while the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language is taking place. It is also appropriate to collect datawithin a short period of time and with little expense.
The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews made with only teachersand questionnaires prepared for students and teachers. The questionnaire for students consists of ten thematic groups which consist a total of seventy-three items which were filled by three hundred and fifty- eight sample students taken from nine. Four of the sample sections are from grade eleven and five from grade twelve. The teachers’ questionnaire was also grouped in to twelve thematic sections which consist of seventy-six items. Both the students and teachers’ questionnaires include open ended and closed ended items. In the course of data collection process classroom observations were made first and then the questionnaires were distributed to students and teachers and finally the interviews with teachers were made. The data collection process started in March and ended in May. |
