The aim of this study has been to investigate the English language needs of civil engineering
students in Bahir Dar, University. Fourth year 40 civil engineering students, 20 civil
engineering instructors, and three English course instructors have been taken for the study.

analysis were the instruments employed to collect the data. These data collection
instruments were referring to students' English language needs, their lacks. their
perceptions of..· the usefulness of the English courses they have taken and their course type
preferences to take. Descriptive statistics had been employed in analyzing the raw data.

Comprehensive sampling was used as the population is small. The results show that
. listening, writing, and reading have been chosen to be the most frequently used skills though
other skills have been chosen to be used too. Listening_ skills, language functions, and

reading skills have been chosen to be the most important skills to learn. Vocabulary,
pronunciation, and grammar have been chosen by students as language areas where
students are weak in, and one of the interviewee added speaking skill which students are
weak in too. Both students and language teachers understood the need for specific Jinglish
