Enhancement of Soybean Productivity Through Soil Amendments in Assosa Zone, Western Ethiopia

dc.description.abstract Productivity of soybean in Assosa Zone particularly in Assosa and Bambassi districts is very low due to poor soil fertility management which resulted in severe soil acidity and low Nfixing inoculant in the soil. Hence, four separate field experiments were conducted to identify effective integrated soil fertility management practices for enhanced productivity of soybean. The field experiments were carried out using sixteen treatments during the main cropping season of 2019 and 2020 in Assosa and Bambassi districts. The first experiment consisted of factorial combinations of four biofertilizer inoculants without biofertilizer (B1), SB12 at 500 g ha -1 (B2), MAR1495 at 500 g ha -1 (B3) and SB12 at 250 g ha -1 +MAR1495 at 250 g ha (B4); and four inorganic fertilizers NP (F1), NPS (F2), NPB (F3) and NPSB (F4) at their recommended rates for soybean. The second experiment consisted of factorial combinations of four biofertilizer inoculants without biofertilizer (B1), SB12 at 500 g ha (B2), MAR1495 at 500 g ha -1 (B3) and SB12 at 250 g ha -1 + MAR1495 at 250 g ha -1 (B4); two organic fertilizers without cattle manure (M1) and cattle manure at 10 t ha -1 (M2); and two inorganic NPSB rates NPSB at 9.5-23-3.5-0.05 kg ha -1 (F1) and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 kg ha (F2). The third experiment consisted of factorial combinations of four biofertilizer inoculants without biofertilizer (B1), SB12 at 500 g ha -1 (B2), MAR1495 at 500 g ha -1 (B3) and SB12 at 250 g ha -1 + MAR1495 at 250 g ha -1 -1 (B4); two lime rates without lime (L1) and lime at 5 t ha (L2); and two inorganic NPSB rates NPSB at 9.5-23-3.5-0.05 kg ha -1 (F1) and NPSB at 1946-7-0.1 kg ha -1 (F2). The fourth experiment consisted of factorial combinations of two biofertilizer inoculants without biofertilizer (B1) and SB12 at 250 g ha -1 +MAR1495 at 250 g ha -1 (B2); two organic fertilizers without cattle manure (M1) and cattle manure at 10 t ha (M2); two lime rates without lime (L1) and lime at 5 t ha -1 (L2); and two inorganic NPSB rates NPSB at 9.5-23-3.5-0.05 kg ha -1 (F1) and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 kg ha (F2). The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. All nodulation, growth and yield related parameters were collected following the standard procedures and were analyzed using SAS software version 9.1.3. Significant mean differences were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level. The results of the experiments showed that integrated application of biofertilizer, organic fertilizer, inorganic fertilizer, and lime had a highly significant (P<0.01) effect on nodulation, growth, yield and yield related parameters of soybean in both locations and years. Finally, the interaction of (SB12+MAR1495)+without cattle manure + without lime + NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 kg ha -1 has an economically more pronounced effect in maximizing productivity of soybean in both Assosa and Bambassi districts and should be adopted appropriately to enhance productivity of soybean in areas and similar agro-ecologies. -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 en_US
