dc.description.abstract The studies were conducted to assess husbandry practice and evaluate egg quality traits of Bovans Brown and Sasso chicken Breeds under a small scale chicken management system in North Mecha district, West Gojjam zone, Amhara regional state, Ethiopia. A total of 258 households that have Bovans Brown and Sasso chicken breeds were selected purposively. from the respodantes that collect survey data about husbandry practice. Whereas, egg quality parameters were analyzed from randomly selected 120 eggs (60 Bovans Brown and 60 Sasso chicken) which were produced under small scale management and were bought directly in Merawi town and produced by an intensive management system. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPPS 22) and statistical analysis system (SAS 999) software were used to analyze the collected data. The results indicated that most of the respondents were female. The Average numbers of chickens per household were 23.12 chickens. About 95.3% of the respondents constructed separate poultry houses for their chickens. All the farmers practiced a semi-intensive production system by providing supplementary feeds for their chickens like maize and wheat (28.3%), Alema chicken feed, maize and wheat (19.8%), maize bran, and wheat bran (16.3%) and (35.6%) give different feeds and green leafs. The major sources of water in the study area were hole water. The main purposes of keeping chickens in the study area were both income generation and home consumption. The major reason for chicken mortality was disease in the study area. The result of the studies on the quality egg from Bovans Brown and Sasso breed chicken obtained from different management have shown that there are significant difference both the internal and external egg quality characteristics. Under small scale management, Bovans Brown and Sasso chickens have higher shell thickness and deep yellow color. The eggs qualities of chickens depend on their breed have shown that there are significant difference both the internal and external egg quality characteristics. Similarly, internal and external egg quality variations have been observed between the Bovans Brown breed chicken and Sasso breed chicken. It is concluded that there are variations between the management systems and breeds on egg quality traits. Therefore, attention should be taken from the concerned bodies on the chicken husbandry practice and major production constraints. en_US
