The study was conducted with the objective of identification of major feed resources, nutritional value, and feed balance in Meket District, North Wello zone, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. This study was done using the methodology include household survey, focus group discussion, field observations, secondary data, and laboratory analysis, and data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science and Statistical Analysis System. A total of 399 respondents both from midland (99) and highlands (300) of the district were interviewed. Crop residues, natural pasture, hay, wheat stubble, Tree lucerne leaves and pods, Acacia abyssinica, Ziziphus mauritiana and Carissa edulis were identified as major feed resources in the study area. Digestible crude protein contents of natural pasture grass, hay, wheat straw, teff straw, and wheat stubble were 89.34, 66.10, 23.72, 25.61 and 22.72g/kg dry matter in the highland and 78.75, 39.18, 15.63, 18.78, and 52.11 g/kg dry matter in the midland respectively. Metabolizable energy values of natural pasture grass, hay, wheat straw, teff straw, and wheat stubble were 6.18, 5.65, 4.85, 5.30, and 4.77 MJ/kg dry matter in the highland while 5.90, 5.08, 5.34, 4.29, and 4.39 MJ/kg dry matter in the midland, respectively. The total dry matter, digestible crude protein, and metabolizable supply was 140230.46t, 6054724.40kg, 776700393.3MJ in highland and 123352.05t, 5333159.15kg, and 951199368.10MJ in midland, respectively. The demand of dry matter, digestible crude protein, and metabolizable were 192943.176t, 6640884.10kg, and 1081074155MJ in highland, and 186484.62t, 6418587.96kg, and 1044886413MJ in midland respectively. Digestible crude protein and metabolizable energy supply were satisfied the maintenance requirements of livestock at 72.6%, 91.17%, and 71.85% in highland and 66.15%, 83.09%, and 91.03% in midland, respectively. In conclusion, a feed deficit of about 27.32% of dry matter, 8.83% of digestible crude protein and 28.15% of metabolizable energy per annum in the highland, and 33.85% of dry matter, 16.91% of digestible crude protein, and 8.97% of metabolizable energy per annum in the midland was observed due to the majority of available feed types being low in quality which had greater than 65% neutral detergent fiber. Therefore, to alleviate these problems improve the utilization of browse trees and shrubs for as animal feeds, conserve a sufficient amount of forages and forage production through integration with crop production.
