The study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the performance of 19 maize hybrids which were released for production in high potential maize zones of Ethiopia by three foreign private (Pioneer hybrid Seeds Ethiopia, SeedCo, Syngenta Agro-services AG-Ethiopia) and three public (Baka ARC, Malkasa ARC, Ambo Plant Protection Centre) institutions in Ethiopia. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences (P<0.01) between hybrids for all measured parameters except for the root lodging and stalk lodging. The quantitative characters studied were days to maturity, days to silking, plant height, ear height and grain yield. Grain yield being significantly highest for SCDUMA43. The present study generally revealed that BHQPY546, P3812W, MHJ30 and SCDUMA43 had higher grain yield compared to BH660 BH547, BH540, SC627, BH543 BH661, 30G19, BH670, Wenchi, BH546, MH138, BHQP542, BHJ 40, Jibat and AMH760Q. Among the varieties MH130, SCDUMA43 and Wenchi are early maturing variety. While BH140, BH661, BH670 andAMH760Q are late maturing varieties. The significant difference (P<O. 05) in grain yield and highly significant difference ( P < 0.01)/or other agronomic character among various varieties were probably due to diverse back ground from which the genotypes used in the present study were developed. A significant difference in number of cobs per plant was evident from the above data. The significantly minimum grain yield (3302. 832) was obtained in BHQP542. More grain yield in SCDUMA43 and closely related performance of P3812W can be correlated to plant density, number of cobs per plant, number of grains per row. In the present study, hybrids that had mean ( 7910. 756kg/ha) values have better performance than other variety can propose or an indication on the process of selecting suitable hybrids to grow in the localised Bahir Dar region as an sustainable selective maize hybrid crop. High heritability of date of an thesis and date of silking indicated that influence of environment on these characters is negligible or low.
