Abstract:
Background: Overweight and/or obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body that may affect health and pose major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Even though there is no well-documented information recently, chronic diseases that are directly or indirectly related to overweight and obesity are increasing in Ethiopia especially in urban areas.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of over nutrition and its associated factors among elementary school children in Biscotto Town, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 470 elementary school children in Addis Ababa. Study participants were selected using multi stage sampling from 6 public and 7 private elementary Schools. Data were collected using combination of interview of children and self-administered questionnaire to their parents. Descriptive statistics was used to sample characteristics. Logistic regression model was fitted to identify the associated between outcome and independent variables. Result: This study showed that 3.9% of primary school children were overweight and 6.6% of the children are obese. Age of the student (AOR=1.957, 95%CI: 1.469, 2.6.06); type of school (AOR=3.421, 95%CI: 95%CI 1.415, 8.270); time spent sitting per day (AOR=1.748, 95%CI: 95%CI 1.185, 2.579); consuming snack once and twice per day (AOR= 95%: 1.556, 14.412) and (AOR=4.477, 95% CI: 1.484, 13,502); and frequency of eating fruit per week (AOR=0.5870, 95% CI: 0.40 2,0.857) were significantly associated with overweight and/or obesity among students. Conclusion: The prevalence of childhood overweight and/or obesity in this study was found to be high. School type, consuming sweet food item and setting more than 9 hours, per day were among the predictors that were significantly associated. Therefore, there should intervention to slow the growing prevalence of overweight and obesity in urban area of Ethiopia.
