Abstract:
The study aimed to identify factors that limit women’s intention to participate in leadership and
management positions in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Bahir Dar district and to forward some
possible recommendations for solving the problems identified by the study. In order to achieve the
objectives of the study, a sample of 172 respondents were selected by classifying the whole
population in to two strata, hence the first strata consists those women employees in the managerial
positions and the second strata includes those who are in non-managerial positions. The data used
in this study were mainly primary and cross sectional survey method was used in data gathering
from those sample respondents by using questionnaire and the data were analysed by using
descriptive and inferential statistics. The study incorporates sociocultural, organizational and
personal factors as independent variables and women’s intention to participate in leadership and
management positions as dependant variable and it tried to show cause effect relationship between
these variables. After careful review of literatures with regard to the relationship between
independent and dependant variables, the hypotheses were developed to guide and to be tested
based on the result of inferential statistics. From these three factors sociocultural and
organizational factors have negative and significant effect on women’s intention to participate in
leadership and management in CBE, Bahir Dar district. Therefore, these factors can cause gender
gap in leadership positions and an ambitious dealing with the gender inequality in leadership such
as encouraging leadership through motivating, networking, mentoring, providing leadership
training and empowering women in decision making systematically might narrow down the
persisting gaps and can help women to come forward.
