The main objective of this study is to investigate the determinants of bank selection decision on selected private medical college students of Bahir Dar City. In this study, nine hypotheses were formulated to see the factors influencing the choice of a bank. This study used explanatory research design since the objective is identifying the factors that affect customers’ bank selection criteria. The populations of this study were private medical college’s students of Gamby, Alkan and Keyamid at different education levels who have Bank accounts from private and state-owned commercial banks in Bahir Dar City. Purposive sampling techniques were employed to select the study area In order to select the respondents Kothari (2004) sample size determination formula were employed. By using stratified sampling technique 108 sample respondents were selected for the study. Survey questionnaire were the instruments used to collect the primary data. The reliability coefficient (Cronbach alpha) was used to test the adapted questionnaire instruments to make sure that the test on the grouped items was regular and consistent. This study particularly examined the determinants of bank Selection decision by including additional variables and using multi-nominal regression model amongst the seven alternative bank choices. This model allowed to test whether the factors associated with one bank’s customer behavior are statistically different from the factors associated with other bank’s customer behavior. Findings from this study reveal that availability of several branches, bank proximity to home or college, recommendation of friends, availability of ATM services and confidentiality on bank occupation are significant predictors for bank selection. On the other hand, the least important factors of bank selection for customers are “financial benefits ”, “reputation” and “promotion strategy”. Based on this findings, it is recommended that hierarchical information integration could be used as a potential method for bank managers to study complex decision making problems such as bank choice.
