| dc.description.abstract | Waste collection and disposal is a challenge for many sub cities in Dessie. Currently, all the waste generated in Dessie ends up at the final disposal sites without any recovery of the valuables in the waste. The overall objective of the study is to quantify, characterize and assuring recycling potential of solid wastes generated from Dessie town – South WolloZone.The overall research design of this study was mixed method research design specifically sequential explanatory. Thus, the method used to quantify, characterize and assuring the recycling potential of solid wastes using descriptive statistics(Mean, percentage, Tables and charts and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation).Questionnaire survey and interviews with beneficiaries and key stakeholders were also carried out. The results show a solid waste composition of 81 % biodegradables (organics), 5% plastic, 6% paper and cardboard, 2 % metals,2 % glass, 1% construction and demolition, 1% Hazardous and 2% Others. The study shows that the total solid waste generated in Dessie town was31,746.54kg/day. The average per capita solid waste generation rate was 0.21kg/ca/day.From the total solid waste generated in Dessie town, potentially recyclable solid wastes areon averageabout8571.57kg/day (13 %), potentially compostable solid wastes are on averageabout 18,412.99 kg/day (82 %)and non-recyclable solid wastes are estimated about 4,761.981 kg/day (5%). The data generated on the quantity and composition of the waste stream in the town would play a positive role in solid waste management and help solid waste managers make informed decisions on waste management options. | en_US |
