dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT Despite its very recent history of cultivation in Ethiopia, rice is one of the potential grain crops that could contribute to the efforts for the realization of food security in the country. Development of appropriate agronomic practices in line with the newly improved varieties is important particularly when the recent varieties have distinct growth behavior compared to the previous. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted at Fogera plain, northern Ethiopia to study the effect of seeding rate and row spacing on yield and yield components of Ediget rain fed low land rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety during the main cropping seasons of 2017. Four row spacing (15, 20, 25, 30 cm) and seven seeding rates (40, 60, 80, 100, 120,140 and 160 kg ha-1) were tested in factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with three replications. Phenological, growth, yield and yield components data were collected and analyzed using SAS 9.0 software. Mean separation for significant parameters was done by using least significant difference method. The main effects of row spacing and seeding rate were significant (p < 0.01) for plant height, panicle length, number of total tillers, number of effective tillers and number of spikelets per panicle (P < 0.05) among the different growth, yield and yield components studied. The results of this study indicated non-significance variation of grain yield, total ground dry biomass yield, thousand seeds weight due to variation of seeding rate and row spacing of Ediget rice variety in the study area. However, seeding rate of 60 kg ha-1 numerically gave higher grain yield (4.54 t ha-1) followed by 100 kg ha-1. Among row spacings 30 cm numerically performed better (4.42 t ha-1) as compared to other spacings. Based on the economic preferable result of this study, 100 kg ha-1 seeding rate and 30 cm row spacing are preferable and recommended. However, further study has to be done under different seasons and locations to verify the recommendation of the present study.
