dc.description.abstract Abstract Indigenous medications of hepatitis have potential advantage for the community by reducing overcrowding of modern health care services. However, this aspect is not well studied. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to explore indigenous medication of hepatitis in Amhara Region of Ethiopia with particular focus on FartaWoreda. Qualitative exploration and an ethnographic approach were employed. The study area and sample participants were selected through purposive sampling techniques. Primary data were gathered through in-depth interview, focus group discussion and observation from the participants with a field work from January - April, 2018. Thematic analysis method was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings of this study revealed indigenous medication of hepatitis is one of the common practicing indigenous knowledge used by the indigenous healers. High access of indigenous healers, socio-cultural and economic benefits, good healer-community interaction and effectiveness of indigenous medication practices were reasons of highly practicing indigenous medication of hepatitis in the study area. Poor environmental conditions, skin eruption, fluster and dirking of more alcohols were cause of hepatitis. Medicinal plants were collected from far distance and near areas and mostly prepared at special days. Healers’ clients' body part observation and their oral explanation were hepatitis illness identification mechanisms. Indigenous medicinal drugs prepared in powder and liquid form, dosage determined through coffee cup, three hand fingers, hand fistful and stored in containers. Bleeding of tongue and prescribed fumigation and drinking of medication were healing practices and gave through cheap prices. Indigenous medication of hepatitis and religious explanations were directly integrated and God play great role for its effectiveness. Generally, we conclude that indigenous medication of hepatitis is commonly practicing in the study area because of its socio-cultural, economic benefits treatment procedures and spiritual healing systems.
