Abstract:
Child-parent abuse is one area of violence which has received very limited attention and
less recognition for researchers and other concerned bodies. In Ethiopia there are no data which
show as to the prevalence or nature of the abuse. Crating an awareness of the issue is essential
to provide the victims an adequate help or to follow proper intervention methods. To fill this gap,
a phenomenological study hasbeen conducted based on the lived experience of 20 parents (12
mothers and 8 fathers) those experienced CPA in kirkos sub city of Addis Ababa. Data was
collected using an in-depth interview and the researcher used interpretative data analysis
method. The finding of the study shows that parents have suffered a great deal from different acts
of abuse by their own offspring. It was identified that the acts include
emotional, psychological, physical, financial, material exploitationabuses as a major natures.
This includes, insulations and intimidation to harm in the first category; stealing money or
parents’ belongings, selling possessions of theirs or their parents’, destroying the home or
parents’ belongings; and demanding parents to buy things they don’t feel they can afford in the
financial or material exploitations; and serious incident from choking to the use of weapons
resulting grave body injuries as physical abuse nature of CPA. Because of this parents suffer
isolation from the neighbours and from the society, they becomes homeless, physical injuries and
psychological problems. Reporting the abuse to the police is a last way after having dealt for a
long time. Alcohol and khataddiction, economic dependency, unemployment, patriarchalthinking
experience of abuse in the family, negative peer and media influence as major causes of CPA.
The measures that parents took are unsatisfactory. Sothis requests the necessary attention and
response. Parents are in need of ending the abuse not their relationship with their children.
