Rice is currently considered as a strategic food security crop in Ethiopia and it is considered as
“millennium crop” expected to contribute to ensuring food security in the country. However, its
yield is very low due lack of appropriate agronomic practices for various rice varieties, A filed
experiment was carried out during 2021/2022 main cropping season at Fogera National Rice
Research Center with the objective of examining the response of low land rice varieties to interrow
spacing under rain-fed condition in fogera plain. The experiment was laid out in
Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in a factorial combination of four inter-row
spacing (15cm, 20cm, 25cm and 30cm) and four low land rice varieties (Wanzaye, Shaga, Rib
and X-Jigna) with three replication.
The data on phenological, growth and yield parameters of
rice were collected and analyzed using SAS-JMP-16 software. The result of the study revealed
that most of the phenological, growth, yield and yield components of rice were significantly
influenced by the main effect of inter-row spacing, variety, and their interaction effect. Planting
of variety Shaga with an inter-row spacing of 25cm gave the maximum grain yield (7.33t ha
),
panicle length (20.00cm), filled grain per panicle (134.86), above ground dry biomass (12t
ha
1
),thousand grain weight (35.10gm), and straw yield (4.66t ha
VIII
-1
),The same treatment also gave
the highest net benefit (261554.5 Birr ha
-1
) with the marginal rate of return (118621) followed
by planting variety X-Jigna in an inter-row spacing of 25cm (NB =253086.5 Birr ha
and MRR=
67117). Thus, it can be concluded that planting variety Shaga in an inter-row spacing of 25cm
boost the productivity and profitability of low land rice e production under rain-fed condition in
the study area and similar agro-ecologies. However, continuous research on agronomic
practices needs to be conducted, since various rice varieties have been released both in the study
area and in the country. |
