industry is a larger project which is complex since it involves variety of parties who are related
to the project. Due to the multidisciplinary of the project participants, conflict becomes
unavoidable issue in the construction industries. Conflicts that commonly involved the parties
that directly participate in the project such as project owner, project consultants, and project

questionnaire survey to identity the factors that cause conflicts; a deep review of different
literature associated with the title, and then identified a total of 4 conflict types, 45 factors that
causes conflict and 5 conflict management approaches. The mean value was used to rank the
factors in the questionnaire survey data, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to
measure the relationship in ranking between respondents who scored for different factors.
According to the questionnaire analysis, the study's findings show that inadequate
communication among project teams, ambiguities in contract documents and market inflation,
are the causes of conflict in building construction projects. It has been found that the
compromising and accommodating strategies are more successful in conflict management
strategies. In addition, 3 public building projects from purposefully selected for the case study to
identify conflict types and conflict management approaches to prevent conflicts that occur during
the construction of public buildings in Bahir Dar. According to the case studies analysis

Compromising is the most common conflict management style used by the study area.
Accommodating style obtained the second place in the ranking whereas competing and
integrating received third and fourth places. Finally, framework of conflict avoidance (conflict
viii
management framework) for public building construction sector is suggested as a mitigation
instrument. This study is conducted to provide a full picture of the conflicts faced by the Bahir
