dc.description.abstract Nowadays, conflict seems like common and inevitable in the construction industry. Construction industry is a larger project which is complex since it involves variety of parties who are related to the project. Due to the multidisciplinary of the project participants, conflict becomes unavoidable issue in the construction industries. Conflicts that commonly involved the parties that directly participate in the project such as project owner, project consultants, and project contractors. Conflict break the relationship among the participants, affect the work quality and productivity, and may lead to project fail if it is not manage in well. The aim of this research is to identify the types, the causes and the application of conflict management approaches to prevent conflicts that occur during the construction of public buildings in Bahir Dar among three categories of the respondents, which are Owner, Contractor and Consultant. To address the basic research questions, various research methodologies were employed, such as questionnaire surveys, case studies and interview. The researcher conducted descriptive research using a questionnaire survey to identity the factors that cause conflicts; a deep review of different literature associated with the title, and then identified a total of 4 conflict types, 45 factors that causes conflict and 5 conflict management approaches. The mean value was used to rank the factors in the questionnaire survey data, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to measure the relationship in ranking between respondents who scored for different factors. According to the questionnaire analysis, the study's findings show that inadequate communication among project teams, ambiguities in contract documents and market inflation, are the causes of conflict in building construction projects. It has been found that the compromising and accommodating strategies are more successful in conflict management strategies. In addition, 3 public building projects from purposefully selected for the case study to identify conflict types and conflict management approaches to prevent conflicts that occur during the construction of public buildings in Bahir Dar. According to the case studies analysis contractual documentation conflicts, payment related conflict, relationship conflicts and task conflicts were major types of conflicts within public building construction projects stakeholders. Compromising is the most common conflict management style used by the study area. Accommodating style obtained the second place in the ranking whereas competing and integrating received third and fourth places. Finally, framework of conflict avoidance (conflict viii management framework) for public building construction sector is suggested as a mitigation instrument. This study is conducted to provide a full picture of the conflicts faced by the Bahir Dar public building projects and their proper management so that future projects will use this information to prevent the destructive effects of conflict situations.
