Abstract:
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease leads to increased dialysis costs and negative health outcomes. Therefore prevention is the best health policy option for lowering the costs associated with a better health outcome from this disease, particularly in developing countries like Ethiopia. This can be achieved by influencing patients' knowledge and attitudes about disease. Previous studies have tried to assess the knowledge and attitudes of diabetic patients towards chronic kidney disease prevention, but there is a paucity of literature on it.
Objective: To assess knowledge, attitude, and associated factors about chronic kidney disease prevention among adult diabetes mellitus patients attending chronic follow-up clinics in Bahir Dar city public hospitals.
Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 386 diabetic patients. The study were conducted from March 20 to April 20 in Bahir Dar city using systematic random sampling method. Data were collected by face-to-face interview using the chronic kidney disease screening index questionnaire. Epi-data was used for data entry, and SPSS for analyses. The association was tested using bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression. A P-value of <0.05 was declared statistically significant.
Results: The study found that 33.9% and 49.7% of participants had adequate knowledge and a favorable attitude towards chronic kidney disease prevention, respectively. The study revealed that an educational level of college or above, a longer diabetes mellitus duration >10 years age group 21–30 years and having ever heard about chronic kidney disease were associated with adequate knowledge about chronic kidney disease prevention. Regarding attitude, college and above educational level, having a family history of chronic kidney disease and having ever heard about chronic kidney disease were associated with favorable attitudes.
Conclusion and recommendation: This study showed that nearly one third of diabetes patients had adequate knowledge, and an average number of participants had a favorable attitude towards chronic kidney disease prevention. Therefore patient education and information dissemination were recommended.
