Power Line Communication (PLC) technology has recently attracted considerable attention due to its utilization of the existing power line network. Power lines are not suitable for high speed data communication because they are made to transmit electric power at low frequencies. The main problem in PLC is Impulsive Noise (IN). To reduce the effect of IN, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technique is used in PLC. But the success of MIMO in mitigating IN is not sufficient to prevent the occurrence of a higher level of channel impulsiveness. Other IN reduction methods need to be applied. In this thesis work, Cyclic Redundancy Check Assisted Successive Cancellation List (CRCSCL) polar codes and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detector techniques are applied together to mitigate the IN effect in MI MO − PLC systems using different number of transmitting and receiving antenna ports such as 2x2, 4x4, and 8x8 MIMO. The error performance of the system is evaluated based on simulation with MATLAB software. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance under the Middleton Class A (MCA) and Bernoulli Gaussian (BG) IN models is compared by taking different levels of channel conditions. The performance of the uncoded and coded systems is also analyzed. The obtained results indicate that the proposed IN mitigation under the MCA noise model needs a minimum Signal to Noise Power Ratio (SNR) value as compared to the BG model. The coded system on MCA model in all system parameters required minimum energy relative to BG to achieve a BER of 10 −5 . Therefore, MCA outperforms the BG model in all simulated results. Since, the system performance in BG goes to the highest SNR values. So,finally our findings show that increasing the number of MIMO-PLC antenna configurations, levels of Impulsive Index (A), the Gaussian to IN Average Power Ratio (Γ), and conversely decreasing the occurrence of IN Probability (P) over the MCA and BG models would improve the performance of PLC systems.
