Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to assess the role of health communication in combating COVID-19 pandemic inthe health centres of Bahir Dar town administration of Amhara region.The researcher employed both conceptual and theoretical frameworks which related with pandemic prevention and control strategy and health communication profession. The qualitative study in-depth interview, focus group discussion,and document analysis were employed to collect relevant qualitative data. The study investigated the implementation of COVID-19 pandemic communication strategy of its effectiveness and familiarity to achieve prevention and control goals of the government.The study framed based on the role of participatory health communication in achievingto avoid miss-perception, negative attitude, belief, and behaviour change to control the pandemic and prevent the local community. The health communication plays an intervention role of the pandemic during the outbreak time, but currently both the government and health organization divert their attention to other transmissible diseases, ethno-political conflict and current market inflation. To play its role the health centres in Bahir Dar town used half-hazard communication system. The research reveals that health communication strategy is misused and wrongly understood because of political, religious, cultural and any other related factors affecting the practical application of strategy. Furthermore, the study found that the health communication practitioners are Heath extension coordinator (HECs),Health Extension Workers (HEWs), and Model Health Communication Participants (MHCPs) in the study area. Most of the practitioners are non-health communication professionals and they need to develop their knowledge and skills of communication.The appropriate implementation of health communication enables the control of the rapidly spread COVID-19 pandemic.
