Background: Health care provider absenteeism especially unscheduled work absence is an important component affecting quality of healthcare and is an issue of high global concern. However, health care provider absenteeism and its associated factors were not well studied in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess health care provider absenteeism and its associated factors among health care providers in public hospitals of Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the magnitude of health care provider absenteeism and associated factors in public hospitals of Bahir Dar city, North West Ethiopia, 2022. Methods: Facility based Cross sectional study design triangulated with qualitative approaches was conducted from September 1 to September 30, 2022. A total of 424 health care providers were selected using Simple random technique by lottery method. Data were entered to EPI data 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS 25. Bi variable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were computed. All variables with p-value less than 0.25 in bi variable logistic regressions were considered as candidates for multivariable logistic regressions analysis. The strength of association was described using adjusted odds ratio with 95%CI. Significance level was obtained at p-value <0.05 and. Descriptive and thematic analysis was used for qualitative data. Results: A total of 403 respondents with 95.05% response rate were included. The mean age of the respondents was 31 (SD =± 4.6) years with the majority of the age group were from 25 to 30 years which was 232(57.6%). The finding of this study showed that the magnitude of health care provider absenteeism was 12.2%, 95% CI (9.16, 15). Presence of child in home (AOR=2.89; 95% CI: 1.4-5.8), far distance of residence greater than 10 km, (AOR=2.65; 95% CI: 1.1-6.3), low job satisfaction (AOR=3; 95% CI: (1.2-7.7), weak supportive supervision (AOR=3.3; 95% CI: (1.3- 8) and high workload (AOR= 3.6; 95% CI: (1.3-9.6) were significantly associated with absenteeism. In addition, in-depth interview revealed that being female, low salary, transport difficulty, social issues, family responsibilities were the main reasons of health care provider absenteeism. Conclusions & Recommendations: In general, the magnitude of health care provider absenteeism in public hospitals of Bahirdar city was high. Responsible bodies should take an interventions targeting on associated factors to improve work place attendance and quality healthcare services.
