Background: Exclusive Breastfeeding promotes better health for mothers and children. Improving EBF feeding around the world could save the lives of more than 820,000 under five children every year. Cessation of exclusive breast feeding during the first six months can expose infants to infectious diseases, and has negative impact on their growth and development. Objective: To assess cessation of exclusive breast feeding and its associated factors among women with infants aged between six month and one years in Bahir dar city, 2022 Methodology: A cross sectional community based mixed study design was employed. A total of 468 participants were selected by using systematic sampling techniques. For qualitative study, three focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informants (KI) were conducted by using convenient sampling method. A semi structured questioner was used. Data was entered through epi collect5 and analysed through SPSS version 23. Factors associated with cessation of exclusive breast feeding was estimated by logistic regression method. Odds ratio with 95% Confidence level and p-value <0.05 was calculated to identify significant predictor variables for cessation of exclusive breast feeding. For qualitative study, Ideas raise by mothers were analysis by narrative way. Results: A total of 468 mothers were included in the study with 99.1% response rate. 274(59.1%) of the respondent cease exclusive breast feeding before six months of infant age. The odds of mothers who have postnatal counselling were 79% less likely to cease exclusive breastfeeding than the counter parts (AOR=0.21; 95% CI 0.12-0.38), The odds of mothers who delivered in the hospital were 52% less likely to cease exclusive breast feeding than health centre (AOR, 95% CI 0.48, 0.2-0.97). Perception of breast milk is not adequate (AOR=4.6; 95% CI 2.4-8.8), and level of knowledge (AOR=6.3; 95% CI 3.4-11.8) were significantly associated with cessation of exclusive breast feeding. Conclusion and recommendations: The prevalence of mothers who ceased EBF were high. Interventions targeting on increasing maternal knowledge on benefits of EBF should be implemented by health institutions, urban health extension workers, and different stakeholders.
