Introduction: Emergency obstetric hysterectomy (EOH) is the surgical removal of the uterus either at the time of caesarean section or following vaginal delivery, or within the puerperium as a life-saving measure in cases of intractable life-threatening obstetric hemorrhage, can be a life-saving procedure where other measures have failed to stop hemorrhage after giving birth. It is associated with considerable morbidity for mothers and their babies and brings an end to a woman’s fertility. , Internationally, the incidence of EOH appears to be increasing, and literature suggests that this may be linked to increasing maternal age and an increase in the rate of cesarean sections. However, to date, the rate of Emergency obstetric hysterectomy in the study area has not been studied well and especially in developing countries like Ethiopia representative reliable statistics are rarely available on this important aspect of women’s health mainly on its prevalence and associated factors of Emegency obstetric hysterectomy. So the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and associated factores of EOH in Debretabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from Feb 2017 to Feb 2022. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the proportion of emergency obstetric hysterectomy and its associated factors at Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Methods: Institutional based retrospective Cross Sectional study design was conducted by reviewing charts of 421 women in emergency obstetrics Department at Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from Feb 2017 to Feb 2022. A simple random sampling technique was used to select charts. The Data were collected by using a prepared structured checklist by trained data collector and checked for completeness, coded, and then it was entered into Epee Info version 7.4.2 and analyzed by SPSS version 25. First descriptive statics was done for categorical variables and described using frequencies and percentage. Bi-variant and multi-variable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. P-value less than 0.05 at 95% confidence level was used to determine the association between the independent and outcome variable. Results: In this study a total of 421 study participants were enrolled and the prevalence of emergency obstetric hysterectomy was 11.9 %( 95%CI :( 3.45-9.87)). Having APH (95% CI: 2.7_13.18), having previous C/S scar (95% CI: 1.49 –7.94), and having PPH (95% CI: 2.49_10.6) were identified as statistically significant factors for the occurrence Emergency Obstetric Hysterectomy. Conclusion: The proportion of Emergency Obstetric Hysterectomy was high(11.9%) those who had PPH, APH, previous C/S scare suggesting that good obstetric care, active management of labor, early recognition of complications, Reduced cesarean section rate and early identification of those high risk groups should be encouraged. : the researcher shall do farther study by including miss factor indicators and the outcome of EOH Recommendation: Early risk identification and referred the high risk mothers to nearby hospital early. Create community awareness about proportion of EOH, its associated factors. Provision of adequate facilities and trained care providers to carry out medical and conservative surgical treatment of PPH also needed to reduce the rate of EOH.
