Abstract:
Background: An immediate postpartum period is a good opportunity to utilize immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptives for women who want to delay or space pregnancy. Among the long-acting reversible contraceptive methods, intrauterine devices (IUD) Jaddel and implants are the most common. . Despite the advantages of LARC methods, they are infrequently utilized in Ethiopia.
Objective: To assess utilization of immediate postpartum long acting reversible contraceptives and its associated factors among mothers who delivered in the selected public hospitals Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted. A systematic sampling technique was used to select a total of 420 study participants. Data was entered into epi-data version 4.6 and analysis was performed by using Statistical Package for Social science version 25. To assess the relationship between each independent variable and dependent variable bi-variate logistic regressions were used at a p-value less than 0.25 and all variables significantly associated with the dependent variables were used in multivariable logistic regression analysis. Finally variables with a P-value less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Result: In this study 30.7% [95% CI (26.1, 35.3)] participants used immediate postpartum family planning. Women at the age of (25–34 years) were 3.228 times more likely utilize IPPLARC, on the other women had, discussed with their partners about family planning were 1.891 times more likely use IPPLARC compared to not discussed. Women who received counseling about IPPLARC during antenatal follow-up were 3.146 times more likely utilized IPPLARC as compared to those who didn’t counseled. Mothers who had positive attitude towards immediate post postpartum long acting reversible contraceptive were 3 times more likely use IPPLARC than women have negative attitude.
Conclusions and Recommendations: In the study area, nearly a quarter of postpartum women used immediate postpartum long acting reversible contraceptive. Therefore, to enhancing immediate postpartum family planning utilization, strengthening communication awareness with partners and promoting partner involvement in family planning to develop a favorable attitude towards family planning, and integrating family planning counseling service with ANC clinic.
