Abstract:
Background: Governance refers to the set of relationships and responsibilities established by a health service between its executive, workforce, stakeholders and consumers.Governance is the core building blocks of health system and it is the priority area in the Ethiopian health sector as it indicated in the sustainable development goal and Ethiopian health sector transformation plan II.However, governance has not been well studied in Ethiopia in general and south Gondar zone in particular.
Objective: The study aimed to assess practice ofgovernanceand associated factors among managers of public health facilitiesin South Gondar Zone, Northwest, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: Facility based cross-sectional mixed study design was conducted on 635 managers of South Gondar Zone public health facilities from May 24/2022 to June 23/2022.Stratified sampling technique was conducted. Data was entered into EpiData version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 25.Governance practice was measured using 32 likert scale variables. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regressions were used. Ethical clearance was obtained from institutional review board of college of medicine and health science. For the qualitative part purposive samplingtechnique was used and data were collected from 10 key informants and analyzed thematically.
Result: The response rate of the study participant was 94%. About 46% of the managers were practicing good governance. Moreover, Feedback system(AOR:2.03, CI:1.01, 4.09), work place of managers (AOR:2.85, CI:1.71, 4.75) job description(AOR:3.39, CI:1.78, 6.42), political interference(AOR:0.53, CI:0.36, 0.79) and organizational communication(AOR:2.23, CI: 1.29, 3.87) were statistically significant factors of governance practice.
Conclusion and recommendation: In this study the governance practice was poor. Timely feedback system, being hospital manager, having good organizational communication, job description and facing political interference in decision making process were found to be associated factors of governance practice. Therefore, we recommend South Gondar zone health department and Amhara regional health bureauundertake strategies to advance job description, timely feedback system, andgood organization communication culture and minimize political interference in managers’ decision making process.
