Abstract:
Maintenance as critical method to improve productivity and Total Productive
Maintenance (TPM) as functional discipline towards the management of physical asset
and enhancing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) paid attention. In one hand,
despite of its critical significance; maintenance has been given little attention in Ethiopia
on the other hand previous works particularly to TPM was only on its building blocks.
None of such works tried to construct TPM implementation framework by investigating
TPM implementation barriers and identifying causal relationship. Therefore, this study
aims to investigate barriers that affect the implementation of TPM and develop TPM
implementation framework.
Literatures were reviewed to identify major barriers. Questionnaire were prepared and
used to collect data. A non-random sampling method followed for the questionnaire and
hypothesis proposed particularly to the foundational element 5Ss. Fuzzy Interpretive
Structural Modeling (FISM) and structural equation modeling (SEM) deployed
respectively to investigate barriers with its casual relationships and validating the
correlation. Barriers then clustered using MICMAC analysis and FISM result showed the
ranks of barriers from higher deriving powers such as culture resistance (CR), employee
Resistance (ER), and lack of motivation (LM) up to lower deriving power such as lack of
reward mechanism (LRM). Furthermore, FISM result also confirmed the importance of
5S implementation success to TPM intermediate output. All hypotheses found statistically
significant and finally, a three-stage TPM implementation framework proposed as a
result.
