Background: HealthCare providing facility choice factors are the service features considered by the patients to select one healthcare providing facility in comparison to other. Prioritizing what patients’ value, need, and prefer in various aspects of a health program can be helpful in evaluating, designing health care services, for policy and clinical decisions. Literatures on health care demand pointed out that people are not passive recipients of health services; rather they make active choices about whether or not to use of provided health care services. Nowadays, patients are more sensitive in choosing health care services as well as in the treatment procedures than before and are more concerned about their health, their disease, treatment and react at times their needs aren’t addressed. Objective: This study was aimedto assess residents choice of healthcare providers; public or private and associated factors in Bahir Dar city,Amhara region, Ethiopia 2021. Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted from June, 2021 to April, 2022. Multi-stage random sampling technique was employed to select 794 study participants from a total of 828 samples and data were collected using a structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Data were coded and entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and transported into SPSS version 23 for analysis. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. Binary logistic regression was used at p-value of 0.25 and 95% CI to select candidate variables for the final model. Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses was employed to identify statistically significantly associated variables at p value <0.05, with 95% CI. Result: In this study a total of 794 study participants were included, making a response rate of 95.89 %. The mean age of respondents was 38(SD ± 10.364) years ranging from 20-80 years. Out of total participants, 451(56.8%) were male. Average family income were 6982.61(SD=2550.356) ETB, from a range of 2000-20000ETB), average family size were 3.92 ranging from 1-10. Public healthcare facilities were preferred by 428 (53.9%) of the study participants while the remaining 366(46.1%) preferred private healthcare providers. In this study, healthcare cost (AOR=7.8029, 95% CI :4.783,12.729),duration of illness (AOR=6.053, 95% CI:3.039,12.056),availability of medicines(AOR= 0.102, 95% CI: 0.048, 0.215), waiting time( AOR=0.175, 95% CI:0.076,0.401)0.401)),availability of laboratory and other diagnostic equipment(AOR=0.102(0.048, 0.215), and utilization of community based health insurance( AOR=0.455, 95% CI:0.275,0.752) were significantly associated with choice of usual healthcare providing facilities. Conclusion: More than half of residents of Bahir Dar city choose public health facilities as their usual health care provider. Choice to public health facilities could be even higher if the quality of care in the public facilities improves in terms of availability of medicines, waiting time, availability of laboratory and other diagnostic services within the facility and community based health insurance coverage is increased.
