Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of physical education program in role of teacher and student with reference to assessment in secondary schools. To this end, the objectives of study were: to find out the continuous assessment strategies used by teachers, to find out whether there was a relationship between continuous assessments strategies (CAS) used and students’ performance in secondary schools, to assess the involvement of students in continuous assessment task, to examine the teacher related challenges of Continuous Assessment Implementation and to examine the teachers related challenges of Continuous Assessment Implementation in the high schools of North Achefer Woreda. To achieve the objectives of the study descriptive survey method was used.The study used primary information related to the problem. The data was collected from sample respondents including students and physical education teachers. The target populations of this study were high school students and teachers in the selected high schools of North Achefer Woreda. Secondary schools were selected using comprehensive sampling technique. The relevant data was collected through questionnaire and interview. Based on the analysis of the data, the study came up with the following major findings: Practical exercises, written tests, and take-home assignments were major assessment strategies that teachers frequently used, most students didn’t involve at all in the assessment activity,poor record keeping, lack of uniformity, failure to provide special support for low achievers, failure to take remedial action, were the major teacher-related challenges in CA implementation. Lack of understanding, lack of readiness, poor participation in doing group assignments and project works and carelessness for CA activities were student-related challenges that could hinder CA implementation. Practical exercises, written tests, and take-home assignments were major assessment strategies that teachers frequently used, most students didn’t involve at all in the assessment activity, perception problem, feedback provision problem, lack of commitment, poor record keeping, were the major teacher-related challenges. Lack of understanding, lack of readiness, poor participation in doing group assignments and project works and carelessness for CA activities were student-related challenges that could hinder CA implementation., it appears reasonable to suggest the following recommendations: To improve the attitude of students; physical education teachers should “practice what they teach” serving as a role model to their students To raise the level of awareness of physical education teachers in the implementation of continuous assessment, there should be training in the form of workshops, seminar and in service programs,
