Abstract:
Researchers in the field of physical education recognized that the goals of physical education are to get school children active through their adulthood. Physical education is an instrument for the development of the country by improving the working capacity and skills of individuals. The promotion of physical activity participation has been recognized in physical education programs and ranked top of the ten leading health indicators. Studies have been showing various determinant factors that might contribute to students’ attitudes toward physical education. Thus, this study tries to assess the attitude of the students toward physical education in secondary schools in Ankesha Woreda.
The researcher used a descriptive survey research method, the Sample was selected by systematic sampling technique of 323 students and the data was collected through the administration of questionnaires. The information was analyzed by SPSS V. 26 computer software, using frequency counts; percentage, mean, standard deviation, descriptive statements, and independent sample t-test.
The results are presented and discussed by categorizing based on three domains of affective, cognitive domain, and psychomotor sub-domains of learning theory for the ease of understanding students' attitudes toward physical education. It is possible to conclude that physical education has positively kept the individuals' affective, cognitive, and psychomotor domains to improve the attitudes of students toward physical education. The time and number of periods as well as extra-curricular activities are designed for Physical Education to provide positive attitudes, necessary knowledge, skill, and ethical value of the subject matter. Besides, respondent agreed that three domains have positive effect on students’ attitude towards physical education. There is a significant difference between the genders of the respondents towards physical education.
