Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate language use for communication in Abiy Ahamed‟s second inaugural speech by identifying the kinds of elements of CDA like the lexical items pronouns the sayings and macro structures and socio cognitive/discursive elements like authorityevidentality polarization and victimization to achieve unity discourse. Thus the text divided into micro and macro section. The micro level consisted of lexical items pronouns figures of speech and sayings. And the macro section consisted of topics and macro propositions and socio cognitive and/or discursive strategies. This study used van Dijk‟s Socio cognitive model 1998 as a conceptual framework. And the analytical framework was van Dijk‟s ideological square and socio cognitive analytical frameworks. It also used CDA as a research approach. The research strategy is descriptive but the design was case study. It used the second inaugural address as a data source. The study revealed that at micro level analysis lexical items pronouns figures of speech and sayings were used to construct unity discourse which is the dominant ideology. Similarly, the macro structure analysis has shown that topics and macro structures were designed to show unity ideology. The cognitive elements like authorityevidentality polarization and victimization employed to form unity discourse. However the actor analysis on attribution has shown representing the out groups in negative light. In short language use in the inaugural speech has shown to build unity discourse however the text represents the in groups positively and the out groups negatively. Therefore this study recommends politicians communication professionals journalists and researchers to take into account the importance of using micro and macro analysis of CDA to examine a specific discourse genre, inaugural speech at micro and macro level was extremely important. On the other hand the study recommends politicians and communication professionals to follow the inaugural address conventional format as it was used in the text. .
