Abstract:
Background- The umbilical cord is a major route of infection among newborns. In Ethiopia, infection is among newborns accounts for majority of under-five deaths. Inappropriate umbilical cord care practices have been linked with infections and mortality in newborns but there is no enough evidence that can show the proportion of mothers who practice appropriate home-based cord care at home among mothers with one year old infant according to standard practice of cord care.
Objective: To assess appropriate home-based cord care practice of mothers after birth and associated factors among mothers who delivered in previous 12 months of the date of the study in hulet ejju enessie district of Amhara region, Ethiopia, 2021.
Methodology: Community based cross-sectional study was conducted on 632 mothers who have infants using a multistage sampling technique. The data were collected by adapted structured questionnaire and the collected data were entered into the Epi Data version 3.1 and analysis was done using SPSS version 20.0.Finally, bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were carried out to identify factors associated with appropriate home-based cord care practice by considering p<0.05 as statistically significant.
Result: The prevalence of appropriate home-based cord care practice among women after birth was 175(28.2%) with 95% CI(24.8 -31.8) and having ANC follow up (AOR= 4.13; 95% CI:(1.94-8.81), good knowledge of appropriate home-based cord care(AOR= 7.54; 95% CI:(3.81-14.93), and having information on home-based cord care status (AOR= 3.11; 95% CI: (1.94-4.98) P <0.05 were demonstrated significant association with appropriate home-based cord care practice.
Conclusion: This study has showed that still the practice of appropriate home-based cord care practice of mothers after birth is low. Attending ANC follow up, having information about appropriate cord care practice and knowledge of cord care of mothers were identified associated factors with appropriate home-based cord care practice of mothers. Health education concerning on cord care practice should be intensified by health care workers and health extensions worker during each maternal health service delivery. Regional health bearo and worda health office should strength ANC service by regular monitoring and evaluation.
