Abstract:
Background:Community health volunteers have great importance to overcome the increasing de-mand for healthcare services and the shortage of formal healthcare providers.Moreover, they would fill the gap for unmet promotive to rehabilitative health needs of the communities. Low level of mo-tivation is a critical challenge for many countries’ health system, yet, very little attention has been given to this topic. The current status of motivation and associated factors of the women health de-velopment team leaders in Ethiopia are not well documented and focused only on specific cadre of health workers(1).
Objective:The objective of this study was to assess the motivation status of women health development team leaders and associated factors in Dangila woreda, northwest Ethiopia, 2021.
Methods:A community based cross-sectional study design was conducted from September to December in Dangila woreda.Simple random sampling technique was used to recruit 287 wom-en health development team leaders.Datawascollectedbyusingainterviewer-administeredstructuredquestionnaireadopted fromMinnesotaSatisfactionQuestion-naire1977version. Data were entered into epi data and analyzed by SPSS version 23. Bi-variable and multivariable analysiswere done to identify factors associated with motivation.The associa-tion was measured by adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI.
Results:Atotalof287Women health development team leaderswereparticipatedinthestudy with 100% response rate.Theproportion of motivation among women health development team lead-ers was 35.5% (95% CI: 30.2%; 41.3%).Respondents who had good relationship with the com-munity[AOR=4.52; 95% CI (2.36, 8.66)], community recognition[AOR=2.64; 95% CI (1.37, 5.11)],supportive supervision [AOR =2.29; 95% CI (1.21, 4.36)], recognition by the government body [AOR =2.68; 95% CI (1.14, 6.29)] and Physical incentives [AOR =3.56; 95% CI (1.29, 9.80)]had a statistically significant association with motivation of women health development team leaders.
Conclusion and Recommendation: ThemajoritiesofDangila woreda women health develop-ment team leaders were demotivated with their current work. Thisrevealed that there is a need to give attention to improve women health development team leaders’ motivation. Good community relationship,giving recognition of their work by the community and government will enhances their motivation. Moreover, physical incentives and supportive supervision affects women health development team leaders’ motivational status.
