Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to assess the practices, opportunities and challenges of
implementing early childhood care and education the case of some selected primary schools in
Bahir Dar city administration. To this end, a qualitative research approach with case study
design was used. Giving emphasis to constructivist philosophical paradigm, the study depends
on the interpretive and subjective realities of people in their natural setting. Hence, the study
used in-depth interview, key informant, direct observation, and focus group discussion as data
collection instruments. In doing so, the analysis involved coding, organizing, and synthesizing
the data qualitatively. The finding of the study indicated that in general the overall ECCE
practices were found at the infant stage or very poor. Regarding the opportunities of ECCE the
finding revealed that the startup of ECCE with its limitations were found very essential and
creates a room for children to improve their potential. On the other side, the finding of the study
confirmed that the implementation of ECCE was facing several challenges. The major
challenges includes physical barriers, inadequate teaching and learning resources,
developmentally inappropriate education curriculum, lack of proper teachers and caregivers
training, and unbalanced/inappropriate teacher-student ratio. Generally, the ECCE practice is
not found in line with the education policy of Ethiopia. The results of the study would have
important implications for the advancement of ECCE program, to augment the holistic
development of children and would serve as to create promising generation. Therefore, Bahir
Dar Education office, governmental and non-governmental organizations must pay their
attention on the implementation of the program.
