Abstract:
This study focused on the practices of communicating agricultural innovations of Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and the synergy of key stakeholders. The study was intended to examine the communication practices applied in the agricultural innovation processes, participation of farmers, the connection of stakeholders and the flow of information and the challenges that have been obstructing the agricultural innovation identification, demonstration, dissemination and adoption. Applying mixed research method, data have been gathered through FGDs, Semi-structured interview, In-depth interviews and Questionnaire. The items in the data gathering tools were prepared based on the premises of DOI and PC theoretical frameworks and AKIS model which included communication approaches and participation of key stakeholders in agricultural innovation processes. A total of 42 farmers, 15 researchers and experts 170 development agents have participated. The findings show that communication, which has to play key roles in fostering conscious and active participation of key stakeholders, has been marginalized in the agricultural innovation phases: innovation identification, dissemination and adoption. There are gaps in planning and applying inclusive and dialogical communication approaches to enhance agricultural innovation activities and connecting key stakeholders (farmers, researchers, DAs and experts) for coordinated actions and information exchange. Farmers are not empowered to be active participants at each stage of agricultural innovation phases through effective communication methods. This implies that communication needs to be considered as a key component of agricultural research activities and has to be planned cautiously for meaningful and sustainable agricultural transformations.
