Abstract:
Background: The prevalence of under nutrition is very high in developing countries especially in under- five children. The government of Ethiopia develops health extension programs to improve stunting and wasting. However still, under-nutrition is one of the main health problems facing children in Ethiopia.
Objective, to assess and compare under-nutrition and its associated factors of among 6-59 month children from model and none-model Kebeles of Raya, Kobo Woreda, North east Ethiopia march- April2020
Methods: a community based comparative cross sectional study design which was conducted among 624 under-five children (312 from model and 312 from non-model kebele) in Raya kobo district from March 10 to April 05 2020. Stratified Simple random sampling was used to reach study participants. Pretested and structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The WHO Anthro was used to convert raw anthropometric data into Z-scores. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were done. A p-value less than 0.05 of were considered to declare a result as statistically significant.
Results: the prevalence of stunting among under five children was 30.1% (95%CI: 24.7-34.9) and 40.7% (95% CI: 35.6-45.8) in model and non-model kebeles respectively. Whereas, the prevalence of wasting was 7.4% (95% CI: 4.5.-10.3) and 11.5 (95% CI: 8.3-15.4%) in model and non-model kebeles respectively. source of drinking water(AOR 2.23), child age(AOR 3.2), diarrhea (AOR 2.13) and exclusive breast feeding(AOR 3.39), were the factors associated with stunting in model kebele, whereas immunization status (AOR 4.2), distance of water source(AOR 2.78) were determinant factors for stunting in children from non-model kebele. HFIAS (AOR 2.39), child fever (AOR 1.93), marital status (AOR 2.49), and presence of toilet (AOR 2.3) were the main predictors of wasting in study area.
Conclusion: The present study showed that under-nutrition is an important public health problem among under-five children from model and non-model kebele in raya kobo district. This study showed that there is significant variation in the magnitude of stunting. Therefore, strengthening creating model kebeles, breast feeding, toilet utilization, water sanitation, and immunization coverage are critical interventions to reduce the level of under-nutrition among under five children.
