Abstract:
Back ground: solid waste collection problem is a major public problem in developing world including Ethiopian even if the government implements different strategies and small enterprises are organized at each city level, the problem still not resolved.
Objective: -To assess willingness to pay for solid waste collection service and associated factors among households in the three-metropolitan city of Amhara region, North Ethiopia, 2020
Methods: A community based cross-sectional study design was conducted with a total of 811 households from the three metropolitan cities in Amhara region. Simple random sampling technique was implemented to select kebeles included in the study in the three metropolitan cities. Data was collected by pretested structured questionnaire. The data quality was maintained during data collection and before analysis by checking for its completeness and recoding. The data was entered to Epi data version 4.6 and exported to Stata version 14 for data cleaning and analysis. Tobit regression analysis was performed. P<0.05, was taken as statistically significant and independently associated with willingness to pay.
Result: - In this study, 85.3% (95% CI 82.8, 87.8) of participants were willing to pay for solid waste collection service with the response rate of 98.2%. Married (β = 8.97, 95% CI (1.01, 16.92), secondary and above education (β = 12.93, 95% CI (2.47, 23.39), rich wealth ((β = 5.16, 95% CI (2.10, 18.22) and satisfaction (β = 12.93, 95% CI (2.47, 23.39) are significantly associated with willingness to pay.
Conclusion: Willingness to pay for solid waste collection service in this study is high as compared to studies done in this title. Marital status, time spent in the area, wealth status, educational level and perceived satisfaction in the current service had significant association with WTP.
