Abstract:
Municipal Solid waste is one of the social and environmental challenges that both urban
and rural areas are facing big problems. Poor solid waste manageme nt in DeberBrehan has
resulted in the build- up of waste on open areas, in drains, roadside, streets, ditches, and near
houses, causing anuisance and environmental pollution, such as leachate from piles (water
and soil pollution) and burning ofwaste (air pollution) and clogging of drains. This study a
ms toassess the ch allenges and opportunities in municipal solid waste management of Deb
reBerhan town. The study was conducted on systematic sampling and stratified randomly s
technique. The analysis of thispaper was carried out using both qualitative and quantitatie
techniques. The households are estimated torepresent allclasses of income lvels;low, middl
e,and high.Daily waste generations from those households were collected and separated int
o their components;the weight ofeach component was recorded. This has been conducted f
or eight consecutive days toget the average daily household waste generation rate and per
capital daily generation rate. The study showed that household so lid waste
generation rate has adirect relationship with family andincome level.Low,middle, and high
income level households generate 0.9,1.22,and1.61kg/HH/day,respecti vely. The yearly sol
d waste generation rate of Deber Brehan town was 12254.6 m3/year, this is dominated by
the organic waste of 5884.169 m3/year, inorganic 4113.12 m3/year, ash and dust 2155.196
m3/year,and other waste 102.1 m3/year.Lackof public awareness, the low performance of
