dc.description.abstract Municipal Solid waste is one of the social and environmental challenges that both urban and rural areas are facing big problems. Poor solid waste manageme nt in DeberBrehan has resulted in the build- up of waste on open areas, in drains, roadside, streets,ditches,and near houses,causing anuisance and environmental pollution, such as leachate from piles (water and soil pollution) and burning ofwaste (air pollution) and clogging of drains.This study a ms toassess the ch allenges and opportunities in municipal solid waste management of Deb reBerhan town.The study was conducted on systematic sampling and stratified randomly s technique.The analysis of thispaper was carried out using both qualitative and quantitatie techniques.The households are estimated torepresent allclasses of income lvels;low,middl e,and high.Daily waste generations from those households were collected and separated int o their components;the weight ofeach component was recorded. This has been conducted f or eight consecutive days toget the average daily household waste generation rate and per capital daily generation rate. The study showed that household so lid waste generation rate has adirect relationship with family andincome level.Low,middle,and high income level households generate 0.9,1.22,and1.61kg/HH/day,respecti vely. The yearly sol d waste generation rate of Deber Brehan town was 12254.6 m3/year, this is dominated by the organic waste of 5884.169 m3/year, inorganic 4113.12 m3/year, ash and dust 2155.196 m3/year,and other waste 102.1 m3/year.Lackof public awareness,the low performance of rules and regulation, lack of institutional,lack offinancing, poor condition of solid waste disposal practices, poor infrastructurewere the main challenges of solid waste management and disposal practices in Debre Berhan town. Therefore, the best ways that used to tackle the above problems are: implementation of sustainable soli d waste management practices through awareness creation and training, impro vement of SB PDD and institutional structure and budget allocation, implement of rules and regulation and involvement of community in solid waste management practices all stakeho lders. wastes are collected to know the possibility of utilizing alternative solid waste management big opportunity like c omposite, job creation,biogas, recycle and reuse.Finally, the stu dy some important recomm endations towards implementing the developed strategies to mitigate the existing solid waste management problems.
