Though Ethiopia is rich in its renewable energy potential, still enormous number of rural population lives without having access to the basic electric energy. Hence the purpose of this study was to identify the challenges and opportunities of rural electricity access in the country and to recommend feasible technical options to make electric energy accessible for all rural Ethiopia. This study used geospatial data collected from Ethiopian electric utility and data from satellite remote sensing freely provided by the World Bank group’s energy sector management assistant program. Geospatial approach is used to identify electrified from non-electrified areas; grid option from off grid electrification options and the cost analysis. The result indicated only around 34.4 million people which are about 31% of the total population have access to grid electricity. Inadequate infrastructure likes of road and distribution substations; Population settlement characteristics and depending only on grid electrification technology are responsible for the delay of electrification access. To provide power for the remaining the non-electrified areas, there is a potential to increase electrification rate to 75% by serving around 48.27 million additional people only through grid densification and extension options. In addition by introducing renewable energy off-grid options it is possible to serve additional 27.27 million people to fully achieve the universal electrification access goal.
